Trent Richardson: Colts Can Finally Say Goodbye

The Indianapolis Colts can finally say goodbye to disappointing running back Trent Richardson this offseason.

Trent Richardson was acquired by the Indianapolis Colts last season from the Cleveland Browns, and Ryan Grigson decided to give up a first-round pick for him. Unfortunately, the trade didn’t end up working out for the Colts and they will likely say goodbye to their disappointing running back this offseason.

During this past season in 15 games, Richardson ended up running for 519 yards and three touchdowns on 159 carries. Those numbers aren’t going to get the job done for an NFL running back, and he has officially earned the “bust” label from the Colts with that performance. He showed some flashes of talent throughout the season, but wasn’t able to play well consistently.

At just 24 years of age, there is still a chance that he can turn his career around. Indianapolis likely won’t stick with him another season, especially after the news broke that the Colts suspended him for two games to end the year. That makes the likelihood of him being back next season even worse, and it is likely that we have seen the last of him in a Colts’ jersey.

There aren’t going to be many fans that will be upset about that news. Richardson hasn’t made many fans since being acquired from the Browns.

It would be interesting to find out what the issue has been for Richardson in Indianapolis. He showed a lot of talent and potential in his rookie season with the Browns, but none of that talent has transferred to the Colts. Dan “Boom” Herron came into the game and played well, which makes the possibility of the offensive line being the issue a non-factor.

All of that being said, most Colts fans are hoping that we have seen the last of Richardson in Indianapolis. It would be wise to get rid of him now and move on with Herron and perhaps a free agent signing. There are plenty of talented backs hitting the open market this offseason, and Grigson needs to bring one in and get rid of Richardson.

Obviously it’s disappointing that things didn’t work out with Richardson and the Colts. If he had been able to live up to his potential, Andrew Luck would have had a legitimate running game to grow alongside of him. That didn’t end up being the case, and the Colts will likely be looking for a new running back to bring in this offseason.
