Colts Must Pursue Running Back Frank Gore

The Indianapolis Colts need to pursue veteran free agent running back Frank Gore this coming offseason.

Frank Gore has been one of the most consistent starting running backs in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers, and he is preparing to hit the free agent market this coming offseason. The Indianapolis Colts have a major need at the running back position, and they need to do everything they can to sign Gore.

Andrew Luck led the way for the Colts this past season, and they ended up being the top passing offense in the NFL. They still haven’t figured out how to establish a legitimate running game, but signing Gore would be one way to do just that. He has a proven track record of being one of the best running backs in the league, and the Colts would be wise to spend some money to bring him on board.

There is no question that Dan “Boom” Herron is a good running back, but he’s not the type of running back that can put his team on his back and lead the way if Luck is having an off game.

Adding a player like Gore would not only bring an improved rushing attack, but it would also bring on a veteran leader. Indianapolis is a very young football team on the offensive side of the ball, and they could use a more established leadership figure.

Gore also proved this past season that he is still more than capable of playing at a high level when the football is put in his hands. He ended up rushing for 1,106 yards and four touchdowns on 255 carries throughout the course of the regular season. Those numbers would be a big improvement over what the Colts were working with, and he’d likely have an even bigger role in Indianapolis than he did with the 49ers.

All of that being said, the Colts need to seriously look into signing Gore this coming offseason. General manager Ryan Grigson has always been a very aggressive guy in free agency, and adding a legitimate running game is the Colts’ biggest need offensively.

Expect to see the Colts make some moves this offseason in free agency, and Gore will likely be a guy that they show interest in.
