What Should Colts’ Fans Expect from Coby Fleener in 2015?

It is never too early to think about the 2015 season and for good reason. The Indianapolis Colts went 11-5 for a third straight year and made it all the way to the AFC Championship game before being dispatched by the Patriots. Many Colts players stepped up in the 2014 season and one player that comes to mind is Coby Fleener.

In 2014, Coby Fleener, the 6’6″, 251-pound tight end, had a breakout year for the Colts. Per ESPN, Fleener had 51 receptions for 774 yards, a 15.2 average and eight touchdowns. Fleener tied for third in the league, along with Dwayne Allen, in touchdowns by tight ends behind the likes of Antonio Gates, Rob Gronkowski, Julius Thomas and Jimmy Graham.

On the flip side of the coin, Fleener did have his struggles at times. Ever since Fleener has come into the league, he has been known to drop a few passes his way and everyone one remembers the infamous drop against the Redskins. Also, some games Fleener would only have one reception for only a few yards. Fleener also needs to become a bigger factor in the postseason.

In the 2014 postseason, Fleener only had seven receptions for 97 yards and no touchdowns.

While Fleener does have his critics (for the record, I am a huge Fleener fan), you cannot deny that each season he has progressively improved. People may argue that he should be further along with his development based on his connection with Andrew Luck and when the Colts drafted him, but any improvement is great.

Now, after showing fans and his team the talent he can bring to the table this 2014 season, what is to be expected for the next season? Fleener is now starting to realize his potential and Pep Hamilton’s tight-end scheme gives Fleener chances to really hurt opposing defenses. I believe Fleener will improve his numbers with receptions, yards and dropped passes.

Also, if the Colts finally get a run game this year (fingers crossed) and with Pep’s love with tight end sets and a power running game, Fleener’s stats will significantly improve. At the end of the season, I predict Fleener’s stat line will be 70 receptions for almost 900 yards. This season, Fleener will fly.
