As the Colts Fall, So Does Their Roof

Tonight wasn’t pretty for the Indianapolis Colts.

Not just Vick Ballard‘s hamstring giving out as his bid to be a Colts player is quickly coming to an end, not just Boom Herron’s shoulder, which was seen in a sling after the game, and not just the 9-6 score line that left fans more bored than disappointed.

No, tonight had more negative implications than just the score –

That’s right, according to a report from the Indianapolis Star, a woman was hit in the head by “falling debris,” later identified as a couple of bolts by fans in the surrounding section. Indianapolis agreed to shut the roof pre-game so they could open it at halftime, but it turns out this seemingly innocent move ended up injuring a woman to some extent. The report cites that the woman’s condition is not known at the time.

Add this to a fairly pathetic showing (even for the last preseason game) and injuries, and Colts fans probably aren’t particularly thrilled this evening.

It was a game of field goals – two from the Bengals in the second quarter, one from the Colts in the third, and one from each team in the fourth. Andrew Luck did not see any time on the field and instead those duties were left to Matt Hasselbeck and, mainly, Bryan Bennett. A rookie out of Southeastern Louisiana, Bennett had an average debut – completing 15/25 pass attempts, but throwing three interceptions on top of suffering through four sacks totalling a loss of nearly 25 yards.

Initially, the running game looked promising but Vick Ballard suffered an injury to his hamstring limiting his time on the field, leaving Tyler Varga to absorb most of the carries.

One of the bright spots to the night for fans in Blue and White was the performance of Duron Carter, who caught five passes for 85 yards including a 45-yarder where he showed his quick feet. Going into camp, Carter was one of the players to keep an eye on and now is that much more likely to receive a place on the final 53-man roster.

The Colts open up the season next Sunday in Buffalo at 1:00pm ET.
