Report: Colts Andrew Luck to miss first game of career

According to an ESPN report that broke this morning, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck will be rested against Jacksonville thus missing the first game of his career.

I wrote earlier this week that Andrew Luck should definitely play against the Jaguars to give him some confidence in a home environment. The Colts higher-ups, however, feel different and Luck will be rested today for the quick turnaround against Houston on Thursday.

The decision is probably smart – after all should Indy not do well against Jacksonville they will need everything they’ve got against Houston midweek especially with the spotlight already on the Colts quarterback and the five men in front of him.

Perhaps most important, though, is the man behind Luck on major downs – Frank Gore. Indianapolis picked up Gore in the offseason and he has not had the role that he would have liked in the Colts offense going forward. That will change today. With 40-year-old Matt Hasselbeck standing in for Indy’s #1 draft pick in 2012, the run game will be heavily relied on as Indianapolis must win to avoid their worst start to the season since the two-win season in 2011.

It will be strange not season Luck under center, but hopefully it will give different weapons different chances to make an impact today. As for the rest of the injury report, Darius Butler and Vontae Davis are listed as probable – another boost for the defense – Dwayne Allen is questionable, and Greg Toler is still listed as out.

The Colts kickoff against the Jaguars at Lucas Oil Stadium today at 1 pm ET.
