Pacers sign F Kadeem Jack, training camp roster up to 18

The Indiana Pacers have today announced the signing of free agent F Kadeem Jack out of the Rutgers University, bringing the training camp roster to 18.

Jack is listed as a 6’9, 235 lb forward and has a very similar build to someone the Pacers saw last night against Detroit in Marcus Morris. It’s unclear, however, what this means for other players on the roster or if Jack really has a shot to make the team.

The Queens native was a regular feature for the Scarlet Knights the last two seasons, though, averaging 13.6 points and 6.6 boards per game on about 30 minutes per game. Jack’s senior season out east was his best and he’s definitely a bigger body at the small/power forward spot, but he’ll have to do a lot to make himself just the 11th player ever in the NBA to come from Rutgers.

Honestly, it is a puzzling decision that seems somewhat out of the blue. NBA regulations state that the roster must be down to 12 active players, 15 total, by the day before the regular season begins, meaning Indiana will be telling three guys that they don’t have a spot on the team for 2015/16.

Last year, C.J. Fair got the boot last year and is back in Indy again, but he’ll likely be one to go. Toney Douglas is looking out an outside shot, and Jack could be shifted down to a D-league position, but they just aren’t ready to make that move yet. Those three are likely candidates, but it’s also not safe to rule out someone like Shayne Whittington. Whittington has had a good preseason and spent time with the team last year as well, but sometimes even that isn’t good enough.

There’s plenty of time for a final decision to be made and at this point the team is probably looking game-by-game and not week-by-week in the preseason, but it still leaves a few unanswered questions.

The Pacers tip-off against the Orlando Magic tomorrow night at 7 pm ET.
