Ahmad Bradshaw Re-Signs With the Indianapolis Colts

After weeks of Colts fans patiently waiting, the Indianapolis Colts have announced the re-signing of running back Ahmad Bradshaw.

Ahmad Bradshaw‘s signing comes three weeks after Indianapolis ‘expressed interest’ in his return. What was initially reported by Rand Getlin took time to coalesce. On Tuesday of last week, it was reported that Bradshaw was in Indianapolis to visit the Colts for a workout.

Then, there was nothing, no update or announcement. Just silence. This was mostly due to the Colts’ short week between the Sunday game against Jacksonville and then traveling on Wednesday to face the Texans on Thursday Night Football. One week later, the Colts finally came to terms on a one-year deal with Ahmad Bradshaw. The good news is he no longer has to serve a one game suspension.

Ahmad Bradshaw already knows the playbook  so he can contribute immediately out of the backfield as a compliment to Frank Gore. At 29, Ahmad Bradshaw still has plenty of gas left in the tank. If Bradshaw can stay healthy, he could prove to be the hands out of the backfield the Colts have been lacking this season.

Three weeks ago, I wrote on why the Colts should sign Ahmad Bradshaw. The same reasons still apply:

"Bradshaw’s ability to pick up the blitz as a pass blocker and his hands out of the backfield are reasons enough to consider re-signing him. As the infomercial cliché goes, “But wait! There’s more!” Bradshaw is a great change of pace alternative to the bruising running styles of Gore, Robinson, and Varga.Prior to Bradshaw’s injury in 2014 his 4.7 yards per attempt was his highest average since 2009. Prior to his injury, Bradshaw led the team in red zone touchdowns, mostly from catches out of the backfield. Signing Bradshaw could easily kill two birds with one stone. Simply, adding him as a depth player will create a change of pace and keep Gore’s legs fresh for a playoff run."

With Bradshaw now on the active roster, expect the Colts to work him into the rotation, especially with rookie fan favorite Tyler Varga still out with a concussion. With a combination of Gore and Bradshaw, the Colts have a more balanced attack out of the backfield.

Keeping each other’s legs fresh, Bradshaw and Gore can both punish opposing defenses with their rushing attack and take the pressure off Andrew Luck‘s recently injured throwing shoulder. Bradshaw can immediately become a safety valve for Luck out of the backfield and an additional redzone threat. All of this is just in time for the Colts biggest game of the season against the New England Patriots.
