Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football head coach Brian Kelly criticized his team after their 36-28 loss to the Michigan State Spartans. The Irish had three total turnovers in the loss on Saturday.

Notre Dame now sits with a 1-2 record through three games of the 2016 season after suffering their latest loss to the Michigan State Spartans.

Aside from having multiple turnovers in their most recent loss, Michigan State also enjoyed 501 total yards against the Notre Dame defense that has become thinner by the week with injuries.

Irish quarterback DeShone Kizer threw for 344 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Despite his big day, it wasn’t enough to propel Notre Dame to the victory.

Brian Kelly wasn’t too fond of the team’s performance in the loss, either. He had been asked whether or not it was on Kizer to carry the putrid defense, per the Chicago Tribune.

"“Look at college football,” Kelly Said. “Defenses give up points all over. What we have to do is clean up some things and we’re going to continue to work on it, but, no, DeShone Kizer is not going to be asked to carry us. The entire football team, and my coaching staff in particular, is in a position where they have to coach better. I’ve got to coach better. …We’re sloppy as a football team. There is not a referendum on who’s got to carry who, ‘the defense can’t do that. If you were listening, I just told you about two huge mistakes on special teams and the difference in the game was eight points. We gotta clean up the whole deal.”"

Notre Dame’s lone win on the year came over a week ago, when they defeated the Nevada Wolfpack 39-10 — which is an outcome most would expect. What is scary is that against legitimate programs in Texas and Michigan State, the Irish have gotten close to victory in both contests, but could never pull out with a victory.

With two early losses, Notre Dame’s playoff hopes may be all but done for after their latest mishap. There still could be a chance at a run, but it would be very, very slim.

Notre Dame faces the Duke Bluedevils Saturday, Sep. 24 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
