The Indianapolis Colts were blown out by the Buffalo Bills, 44-20 in the preseason opener for both teams.
Second-year quarterback Andrew Luck played just two series for the Colts. He was 4-for-6 for 51 yards.
Wide receiver T.Y. Hilton hauled in three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown came on a 45-yard pass from Matt Hasselbeck. Hilton had to lay out for the reception and then rolled into the end zone.
Tight end Coby Fleener looked good with two receptions for 37 yards. But on Luck’s second drive, Fleener failed to put two hands on the ball and fumbled it away, ending the drive.
The Bills were clearly playing to win the game and left many starters in for the entire first half of the game. Rookie QB EJ Manuel looked good, especially against the second and third string Colts defenses.
The defense gave up a couple big runs to CJ Spiller early in the game, but once he was taken out the rush defense settled down.
There were a few issues with todays game. The offensive line is still a work in progress. The defense didn’t have anything resembling a pass rush (but didn’t blitz much either). The special teams coverage unit was a mess.
After the game, head coach Chuck Pagano gave an update on TE Dwayne Allen’s foot injury. Pagano said that he would be out “a couple weeks” and it was “nothing major.”
We’ll have more on this game up tomorrow.
