2. Who is going to make the big plays on defense for the Patriots? With Vince Wilfork already out, and Brandon Spikes now on IR, can the Pats stop the run?
The Patriots have gotten the job done on defense by committee since losing Jerod Mayo and Vince Wilfork early in the season. The loss of Brandon Spikes hurts, but it in no way will hinder their chances moving forward.
A trio of guys have held their own in the middle filling in for Vince Wilfork. Rookie defensive tackles Joe Vellano and Chris Jones have emerged as serviceable options. They haven’t played at a Wilfork level, but they’ve shown the ability to make plays in key situations.
As far as addressing the line-backing group, it will be Donta Hightower leading the way. Hightower has emerged as key playmaker in recent weeks and is a viable shutdown option when it comes to playing the run because of his excellent tackling skills. Rookie linebacker Jamie Collins has developed nicely and has earned himself a prominent role in the rotation. Collins, along with veteran backer Dane Fletcher, will both be called upon.
The Patriots are susceptible to above average rushing attacks, though the Colts known struggle in that particular department should not present an obstacle that the defense cannot handle.
