Pacers Working Out Six Rookies on Thursday
By Evan Massey
The Indiana Pacers do not hold a pick in the 2014 NBA Draft until the 57th overall selection late in the second round, but they are still doing their due diligence in scouting. There aren’t many big named players that the Pacers can realistically target at number 57, but they could potentially get a solid young player. Indiana will welcome in six players for pre-draft workouts today, per the teams Twitter account.
There is no doubt that the guard-heavy point guard workout will attract much interest from the Pacers’ fan base. Five of the six names listed above are fairly well known nationally, and would likely be players that would fit very well in the Pacers’ system. Keith Appling and Scottie Wilbekin are the two guards that are the most interesting in the workout, and both players are expected to be on the board when the Pacers select at 57.
Appling averaged 11.2 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game in his senior season at Michigan State. Wilbekin on the other hand, averaged 13.1 points, 3.6 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game. Both players would add nice depth to the Pacers’ back-court, but neither player would likely see the floor next season.
Overall, there are going to be plenty of intriguing players for the Pacers to take a look at in the second round. They still could move up as Larry Bird hinted at in his season exit interview, but until that happens these are the types of players that the Pacers will be bringing in for workouts. Jake Odum is a local prospect from Indiana State University that many underrate, but likely isn’t an NBA caliber player.
