The Indiana Pacers are currently in a very difficult situation after losing their two best players this offseason, and they are very open to making a big move if the right one presents itself. According to a report from Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders, the Pacers are weighing all trade options and are open to trading anyone on their roster outside of Paul George at this point in time. They have reportedly offered Roy Hibbert and Chris Copeland to the Suns for Goran Dragic, and also offered Hibbert to the Detroit Pistons for Greg Monroe.
"It sounds like they’re working the phones and trying to make some trades. There were reports that they offered Roy Hibbert and Chris Copeland to the Suns for Goran Dragic and that they offered Hibbert to the Pistons for Greg Monroe. It sounds like they’re weighing all of their options and gauging interest in their players."
At this point in time, it doesn’t appear that anything serious is being discussed, and the Pacers are taking their time to make a deal. They don’t want to make any knee-jerk reactions to the George injury, and would rather scope things out carefully before pulling the trigger on a trade. It appears that Larry Bird would like to move Hibbert in a deal if they can get a good return for him.
It’s going to be a very interesting season to watch what the Pacers do this season, as there have also been rumors flying around that they could decide to tank. That doesn’t appear to be the way that Frank Vogel, Bird, and the Pacers’ organization is leaning, but they might tank in a way even without trying. Their roster simply doesn’t look good at this point in time, and while they have decent pieces, they don’t have a true leader who can take over games when needed.
Overall, this is going to be a very difficult season for the Pacers and their fans to suffer through after the success that they have had in recent years. Don’t be surprised to see Indiana make a fairly large trade before the trade deadline, and it will likely be for younger players that can grow around George in the future. Names like David West, George Hill, and especially Hibbert are going to be talked about in trade rumors all season long.
