West Lafayette, IN – The Purdue Boilermakers suffered through an incredibly rough season last year, and were hoping to get off to a quick start this year against the Western Michigan Broncos. They did end up winning the game by a final score of 43-34, but that isn’t the fashion that they wanted to win the game in. Unfortunately, they showed some major weaknesses, and it could be another very long season for the Boilers.

There were some bright spots for the young Purdue team, but an ugly win like that is not exactly what they were looking for against a much lesser opponent. Purdue is going to have to play a very difficult Big Ten schedule this season, and this isn’t a good first sign. It’s definitely good to see them open the season with a win, but there are still many holes left in the roster.

Sophomore quarterback Danny Etling played a solid game for Purdue, throwing for 181 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers. He struggled with interceptions last season, and seemed to be much more confident with his play today. Raheem Mostert was another huge bright spot for the Boilermakers, rushing for 146 yards and a touchdown on just 22 carries. Justin Sinz led the way in receiving for Purdue with seven catches for 65 yards and a touchdown, while B.J. Knauf caught four passes for 52 yards.

Former Fort Wayne quarterback Zach Terrell put together a solid outing for Western Michigan, compiling 205 yards and two touchdown, but also threw an interception in the loss. Jarvion Franklin matched his counterpart Mostert with a big day of his own, picking up 163 yards and three touchdowns on just 19 carries. Daniel Braverman caught five passes for 92 yards to lead the Broncos in receiving, while Corey Davis caught four passes for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Needless to say, this was not the type of performance that the Boilermakers and their fans were hoping to see to open the season. A win is always nice, but this type of struggle for them wasn’t a good sign. Hopefully they are able to improve and at least play a respectable season, but for now they have a winning record at 1-0.
