Why The Colts Should Steer Clear Of LeGarrette Blount

The Indianapolis Colts need to steer clear of signing former Pittsburgh Steelers running back LeGarrette Blount.

Now that both Ben Tate and Ray Rice have been crossed off of the Indianapolis Colts’ want list at the running back position, and they need to cross the last option off of their list as well. LeGarrette Blount was the other running back that was mentioned as a potential candidate to be signed by the Colts, but there are plenty of reasons to steer clear of him for Indianapolis.

Blount was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday afternoon in the aftermath of him walking off the field early in the Steelers’ 27-24 win over the Tennessee Titans on Monday Night Football. He was upset over a lack of carries, and quit on his team before the game was over in a huge comeback victory. Le’Veon Bell is the Steelers’ starter, and quite frankly is three times the running back that Blount is at this point in their careers.

Indianapolis could use some help at the running back position following the broken leg that Ahmad Bradshaw suffered, but it simply wouldn’t be a help to bring in that attitude that Blount carries along with him.

As talented as Blount is, he simply cannot keep his attitude from affecting his status on the field with his team. He wouldn’t be getting the type of workload that he wants with the Pep Hamilton aerial attack, and the Colts are going to keep giving Trent Richardson some carries as well. If they did sign Blount, he would probably receive around 10-15 carries per game at most.

There is no question that he is a more talented running back than Richardson and is capable of putting up bigger numbers, but the Colts aren’t going to fit what he is looking for in the long run. He wants to go to a team that will give him 20 or more carries each game, and the Colts cannot offer him that. When he doesn’t get his way, he showed that he doesn’t care about the team and will walk off the field before the game ends.

The Colts are a very talented football team with a chance to compete in the AFC this year, and they don’t need to bring a cancer into the locker room. It’s certainly a tempting option for the Colts at the right price, but it simply isn’t worth the headache that Blount has the potential to become.

Even though the Colts need help at running back and Blount is the best option left, they should not bite and sign him to a deal.
