Hoosiers Shock #22 SMU 74-68 For Statement Win
By Evan Massey
The Indiana Hoosiers shocked the #22 ranked SMU Mustangs with a 74-68 statement win.
Tonight was a major test for Tom Crean’s Hoosiers, and they passed it with flying colors. They were able to play a complete game and the young players stepped up in a huge way. Indiana has now started the season 3-0, and this win is a huge confidence builder and opened some eyes to the talent that this team possesses.
Needless to say, the Hoosiers haven’t been viewed as legitimate contenders this season with all of the young talent that they are relying on. They do have quite a bit of talent, but they simply haven’t been talked about all that much.
James Blackmon Jr. led the way for the Hoosiers with a monster performance, scoring 26 points on 7-15 shooting, including 5-10 from behind the three-point arc. Indiana is going to ask him to step up his offensive performance each and every night, and the freshman showed every aspect of his game tonight. He also grabbed seven boards and made all seven of his foul shots.
Yogi Ferrell had a solid game for the Hoosiers, scoring 13 points to go along with seven assists on the night. Troy Williams came off of the bench to score 11 points and grab four rebounds, while Nick Zeisloft scored 10 points to round out IU’s double digit scorers.
Ben Moore led the way for SMU, scoring 16 points on the night and grabbing seven rebounds. Nic Moore scored 13 points, while Sterling Brown filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
Indiana came out looking to make a statement, and they were able to do just that. This team is legitimate and they will contend in the Big Ten. They still have some work to do, but Crean’s team looks much more focused and prepared for this season.
The Hoosiers will now look ahead to their next game on Saturday night at home against the 1-2 Lamar Cardinals.
