The Indianapolis Colts added some pass rushing to their roster by claiming veteran Shaun Phillips off of waivers.

Ryan Grigson has been known as a very aggressive general manager in free agency and the trade market, and he made yet another move that is being viewed as a potential big move. The Colts have claimed veteran pass rusher Shaun Phillips off of waivers after he was released by the Tennessee Titans, and many believe that he can bring help to the Colts’ defense.

Needless to say, the Colts could use as much pass rushing help as they can get with the way their current pass rushers have gotten to the quarterback. The majority of the sacks that the Indianapolis defense has recorded this year has been off of blitz packages rather than just straight pass rushers. Phillips is not going to get any younger, but he could bring some help to one of the Colts’ biggest holes.

Phillips is in the first year of a two-year contract, but Holder reports that there are no guarantees following this season.

Throughout Phillips’ 11-year NFL career, he has recorded 395 total tackles, 81.5 sacks, 22 forced fumbles, and even seven interceptions. He came up with 10 sacks last year for the Denver Broncos, and was a huge piece of their defense.

Indianapolis made the right decision by claiming him and giving him another chance to get his career back on the right track. He has the potential to come in and be a great leader and improve the pass rush. The Colts are viewed as a contender in the AFC, but adding more pass rush was something that they needed to do.

It will be very intriguing to see what type of chances Phillips gets at playing time over the next couple weeks. The Colts won’t waste time getting him onto the field, and he is ready to play for a contender once again. He only recorded 2.0 sacks this season with the Titans, but perhaps a change of scenery to a legitimate contender will be what he needs to get back on the right track.
