By Evan Massey
The Purdue Boilermakers were able to knock off BYU by a final score of 87-85 in overtime at the Maui Invitational Tournament.
Maui, HI – Purdue basketball hasn’t had its finest years lately, but they appear to be turning the corner back towards success this season. They were able to defeat BYU this evening by a final score of 87-85 in overtime, and moved to 5-1 on the season and finished in fifth place in the Maui Invitational Tournament. It was a big win, and they showed a lot of growth throughout the game and finishing off a close game against a good team as well.
This was a huge statement win for the Boilermakers, and they have plenty of reason to be excited about their performance in the tournament as a whole. Losing to a very talented Kansas State basketball team is not embarrassing, and defeating this BYU team makes up for that to say the very least.
Freshman forward Vince Edwards led Purdue to the win with 25 points on 7-9 shooting and 3-5 from behind the three-point arc. He also grabbed nine rebounds in the contest, and showed excellent leadership down the stretch when his team needed him most.

Rapheal Davis also came through with nice game for the Boilermakers, scoring 18 points on the night while nailing 10-11 from the foul line. Both A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas scored 12 points each to round out the double digit scorers for Purdue. Having two talented seven footers on the team has been huge for Purdue, and opposing teams simply cannot match up with them.
Tyler Haws showed why he is one of the top scorers in BYU history and has received so much attention, scoring 32 points on 9-19 shooting and also made 13-14 from the free-throw line. He nearly was able to power his team to the win by himself, but came up just short late in the game. Haws had a chance to win the game in regulation on a mid-range step back jump shot, but came up short.
Anson Winder also had a big game for BYU, scoring 18 points off of the bench and knocking down 3-3 from behind the arc.
Needless to say, this was a huge win for the Boilermakers and is exciting the fan base even more. They still aren’t expected to compete for the Big Ten title, but they are a legitimate NCAA Tournament team if they keep playing the type of basketball that they have been so far. This team is a pleasant surprise after the squad that the Boilermakers have put on the court over the past couple of years.
The Boilermakers will now look ahead to their next game on the schedule against the N.C. State Wolfpack on December 2nd.
