Is Indiana Hoosiers star point guard Yogi Ferrell an NBA talent at this point in his career?

Yogi Ferrell and the Indiana Hoosiers are fresh off of a big 89-70 victory over the Maryland Terrapins last night, and it showed some of the offensive talent that Ferrell has. He scored 24 points on 8-10 shooting, and knocked in 7-8 from behind the three-point arc.

He has stepped up in a big way this year in his junior season, and has helped lead the Hoosiers to being a top team in the nation. They were ranked 23rd heading into the game against Maryland, and will likely see that ranking rise. Ferrell is a big part of their success, and as a junior he still has plenty of room to grow before he has to leave Indiana.

Does Ferrell possess the type of talent to be an NBA Draft prospect after his career with the Hoosiers is over?

So far this season, Ferrell has averaged 14.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.6 rebounds per game. He has shot 41.8 percent overall from the floor this year, and has knocked down 38.5 percent from behind the three-point arc.

Indiana wouldn’t be nearly the team that they have been without their point guards leadership. He has created looks for his teammates, and has also come up clutch in big games when his team has needed him the most. Is he NBA ready? That is a tough question to answer, but at this point in time he still has work to do before that.

That being said, he is still a junior and has plenty of time to improve the areas that need improvement. He’ll need to become a much better playmaker for his teammates, and he’ll need to continue focusing on improving his three-point and mid-range offensive game. At the NBA level, the fact that he is a small 6’0″ will come back to haunt him unless he can become a deadly shooter.

It will be very intriguing to see if he can pick his game up as the season continues to move along. The Hoosiers are going to need him to continue putting up big games, especially with the NCAA tournament rolls around.

There is no question that Ferrell has the potential to become an NBA talent, but he isn’t quite there yet. He isn’t far away, and likely will be there by the end of his senior season next year. Indiana is going to continue giving him the keys to the offense, and if he can continue improving like he has throughout his collegiate career then he will give himself a chance.
