What a night… Most IU fans still have their heads buried firmly in the sand after that monumental butt kicking Indiana received at Mackey. I hate it when IU loses, but I absolutely loathe losing to Purdue. It stings even more when they basically dismantled the Hoosiers in a game that was never really competitive from the opening tip.

I did think that IU would end up losing this game. I didn’t think they would just get outplayed in every single facet of the contest. The Hoosiers could stop Purdue’s dribble penetration, the couldn’t stop Hammons underneath, and…. Well the defense was simply atrocious.

More from Ink on Indy

It appeared throughout the game that the Matt Painter employed the same defensive strategy that Michigan State did in their thumbing of the Hoosiers earlier this month in East Lansing. Indiana could not drive the ball with any success, and their perimeter ball movement was stifled quite a bit by touch pressure on the top of the key. Even on the rare occasion that IU was able to drive the ball against the Boilers, AJ Hammons was there to swat it away, finishing with EIGHT blocks for the game (a career high).

Yogi’s scoring was the only bright spot in a game that had me hanging my head in most of the night, and I believe that coul have been by design. He led the Hoosiers in scoring with 21. Purdue seemed content to make Yogi become a scorer, while never really allowing him to facilitate plays for his teammates. The result? Indiana’s offense really never did look in sync the whole game.

The 3pt shot, a staple of the Hoosier high-powered offense this season, was virtually nonexistent, as Indiana shot just 4-19 from deep for the game.

While Yogi certainly tried to put the Hoosiers on his back in the second half, at the end, it was too little too late for IU. No one else was really a factor for Indiana, as the Hoosiers scored 14 pts below their season average in the loss.

Indiana did out rebound the Boilers, 34-31, but aside from that, there wasn’t much positive that Tom Crean could take away from this game. Indiana just got thumped… There’s really no sugar-coating it.

Purdue was led by Raphel Davis’s 19 points, and 11 from Hammons. For the rest of the ugly stats, just click here. This guy is going to bed. Hopefully I’ll wake up in the morning and this will all be just nightmare. Something this ugly just can’t be real.
