Colts Run Game: Five Guys that Could Fit the Bill
#3 Frank Gore
Dec 28, 2014; Santa Clara, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore (21) looks on during the fourth quarter of the game against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi
Option three might be a more realistic option for the Colts, as he might come with a smaller price tag. Frank Gore has been a mainstay in the 49ers offense for the better part of 10 seasons.
Compared with the previous two options mentioned, Gore’s numbers look rather plain, at 1,106 yards, and 4 touchdowns last season. While those yardage numbers don’t wow you, they’re almost twice what any Colt running back did last season. In his 10 NFL seasons, he’s been fairly consistent, gaining over 1,000 yards in all but two seasons, one being his rookie year, and the other in a year he missed five games with an injury.
A couple of things make Gore an increasingly realistic get at free agent for the Colts. First, he’s going to be nearly as expensive as the other free agent running backs that are available. His numbers won’t demand a high-dollar contract, which might help Grigson in his attempts to secure the Colts other free agent targets, as well a lock Andrew Luck up for the long haul.
With the high-octane pass offense that Indy has assembled, Grigson might believe the Colts only need a respectable run game, not an overwhelming one. Gore gives them that, and gives them someone who will put up reliable numbers week-in and week-out.
Also, with a brand new coaching staff in the fold in San Francisco, Gore may just be looking for a fresh start at a place that could compete for a Lombardi Trophy. Could the Colts fit that bill?
