In our fourth option, we take a look at the draft. It’s most likely that the Colts will spend their first round pick on an offensive lineman. If that’s the case, getting Melvin Gordon is a longshot. Most mock drafts have him going somewhere in the early second round, well before the Colts make their pick. It’s highly unlikely that he’d be available at that point, but if he were to slide down that far, there’s simply no way you don’t take this guy.

I’ve said many times that I believed the Colts need a big play running back for the final piece of the offensive puzzle. Gordon fits that to a description to a “T.” Last season, in 14 games at Wisconsin, Gordon crushed the single-season NCAA rushing record with 2,587 yards, and scored a ridiculous 29 touchdowns. He also managed to smash the single game rushing record against Nebraska this year, racking up a mind-boggling 408 yards on the ground. You want big play ability?  Gordon had rushes of 88, 69,68, 63, 61, 51 yards…. IN ONE SEASON.

If the Colts want Gordon, the most likely scenario either would have them stepping up to the plate in the first round (and obviously searching for an offensive lineman in free agency) or possibly trading up in the second round to snag him up.  In either case, if the Colts are in a position to grab this talented young back, they should.
