Looking to keep their championship hopes alive, Notre Dame defeated the Northeastern Huskies 69-65 Thursday afternoon to advance to the 3rd-round of the NCAA Tournament.

It may have been a closer game than coach Mike Brey and the Irish had wanted, but they were ultimately able to get the job done, defeating the Northeastern Huskies by a score of 69-65. Notre Dame will play the winner of the Texas/Butler game, which tips off at 2:45 PM Eastern Time Thursday.

Northeastern managed to keep it a close contest for most of the game, but they were unable to secure the victory when it mattered most.

Northeastern cut the deficit to just two with just 33 seconds left in the game but the biggest blunder of the game came with just two seconds left when Northeastern’s Quincy Ford had the ball stolen from him in a critical possession, forcing the Huskies to foul. Two free-throws from Notre Dame on the next possession was all that was needed to give the Irish the win.

Notre Dame forward Zach Auguste lead all scorers with 25 points, while also grabbing five rebounds in the win. The Irish shot 57% from the floor and had 19 assists as a team.

The play of the game came from Demetrius Jackson, who showed that he can ball out.

For Northeastern, sloppy play may have played a big part in the loss as they turned the ball over 16 times and failed to put up a shot to tie or take the lead with more than 20 seconds left on the clock.

The win is one small step for the Irish as they look to keep their tournament run alive. Notre Dame will either play Butler or Texas in the 3rd-round of the tournament.
