Indianapolis Colts: Top Free-Agency Re-signings
The Indianapolis Colts off season has been very busy. General Manager Ryan Grigson has been landing significant free agents since the start of the new year. Colts fans have a lot to be excited about with the additions of Frank Gore, Andre Johnson, Todd Herremans, Trent Cole, Kendall Langford, and the recently acquired Nate Irving. I believe Grigson’s biggest moves have been retaining key pieces from last years run. Here are my top five re-signings from this off season:
1. Darius Butler:
Butler is the best nickel-corner in the league. His ability to shut down speedy slot receivers proved to be pivotal last season. Having Butler increases the Colts chances every Sunday. I believe had Butler hit the open market, the Colts would be down a corner.
2. Mike Adams:
Adams may be getting up there in age, but he showed no signs of slowing down last year. Adams is referred to as the quarterback of the defense. Anytime you have a veteran that has a pro bowl season, you can’t afford to let him walk. Adams is also a big time guy in the locker room, providing veteran leadership for guys.
3. Joe Reitz:
Reitz’s versatility may have saved the Colt’s season. The offensive-line sustained several injuries and Reitz was able to plug a lot of holes. None bigger than down the stretch when he took over at right tackle. Reitz’s strong play helped the Colts run the same offensive-line out three games in a row for the first time all season.

4. Matt Overton:
I know what your thinking, a long snapper. Yes, Overton was a huge reason why Vinatieri was nearly perfect all year long. McAfee didn’t allow many punt returns but when he did number 45 was usually around the ball making a play. Overton is another one of those locker room favorites. That goes a long way.
5. Matt Hasselbeck:
Hasselbeck has meant so much to the development of Andrew Luck. He’s essentially another quarterback coach on the sidelines. He’s also a great veteran leader. Hasselbeck is regarded as one of the better back up quarterbacks in the league. Should anything happen to Luck, Hasselbeck could step in and run Pep Hamilton’s system with ease.
These aren’t the sexiest signings but they are key to Colts chances of making a run in 2015. The bottom line is that you have to be impressed with what Grigson has done this off-season. He’s identified holes and addressed them, with the exception of safety (so far). So much activity and there’s still a draft coming up. Keep your seat belts buckled Colts fans, because this is only the beginning.
