Colts’ Pagano: “Cancer taught me to be thankful for today.”

As reported yesterday, it had been announced that Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano would not receive a contract extension for the coming season and would instead “play out” the 2015 campaign.

We’ve received Pagano’s take on the situation. Here’s what he had to say, per ESPN’s Mike Wells:

As most would know, Pagano was diagnosed with Leukemia shortly after the Colts’ week three match-up against the Jacksonville jaguars during the 2012 season, launching the “ChuckStrong” campaign and what ended up being one of the biggest feel-good stories in the NFL that year.

It is good to see that Pagano seems to be understanding and in good spirits about the whole situation, and has every intent on remaining as the coach of the franchise for a long time.

“I look forward to coaching the Colts this season and for many years to come.”

There’s been a lot of buzz and speculation around this news, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

All it really means is that the Colts are just going to let Pagano play out his four-year contract that he signed prior to the 2012 season. Similar to the Andrew Luck contract situation.

It would take an absolute meltdown in 2015 for coach Pagano to not get his contract extension. With Andrew Luck under center, and playing in the weak AFC South, Pagano and the Colts should be able to find success and be able to add another winning season in the books and keep Pagano as their coach for years following as he continues to coach the team to prominence.
