The Emergence of Jonathan Newsome

In last year’s draft the Indianapolis Colts made a selection in the fifth round. That pick was outside linebacker pass rusher out of Ball State named Jonathan Newsome. New some would go on to have a great rookie season leading the Colts in sacks with six and half. Newsome did start slow but really was a bright spot for the Colts as the season went on and will be a huge part of the future.

While at Ball state, Newsome compiled 116 total tackles (24 for loss) and 16.5 sacks totaling 96 yards for loss. In 2012 Newsome was named 2012 All-Mid-American Conference second team. In 2013 he was named All-Mid-American first team. Newsome went to the combine in Indianapolis and ran a 4.73 40 and benched 21 reps.

With the 26th pick in the fifth round (No. 166 overall) the Colts selected Jonathan New some OLB Ball State. I was able to obtain a small interview with Newsome via Twitter direct message and he let me in on what it was like being drafted.

Jonathan really flew under the radar as the season went on still being productive. Then came the playoff game against Denver at mile hike stadium or as some like to call it “black flag city”. Newsome made a play that opened all Colts fans to just who No. 91 is.

Jonathan Newsome will definitely be in the Colts future plans. He was second in the NFL in sacks as a rookie to only DRPOY (defensive rookie of the year) Aaron Donald. Newsome stands to only get better after his already impressive rookie season. I believe the Colts have a monster in the waiting with Newsome, he’s oozing with potential.

Throughout his college career all Newsome did was get better every year. That trend should continue with his professional career. Don’t sleep on this guy people, number 91 will become a household name very soon. Follow him on Twitter @JNEW_11 a great player and even better person.
