Impact of the Roy Hibbert Trade

Roy Hibbert and his $15.5 million contract will be the Lakers problem as of July 9, when the moratorium ends. The Pacers landed coveted free agent Monta Ellis and re-signed forward LaVoy Allen and sixth man Rodney Stuckey. Without the trade, Stuckey’s re-signing would not have been possible. It is also probable that the Pacers will end up acquiring a player from the Lakers trade for Hibbert. The details are still being ironed out as both teams are making last-minute cap maneuvers leading up to the end of the eight-day moratorium.

  • Some players rumored to be involved in the Hibbert deal include Ryan Kelly, Robert Sacre and Nick Young. Kelly looks like the best fit and has the highest upside of the three. According to a July 5th article on Yahoo Sports, Marc J. Spears and Adrian Wojnarowski detailed such a possibility:

"As the Lakers work to clear cap space to sign free agents and absorb Hibbert’s contract, Nick Young is a strong candidate to be unloaded, sources told Yahoo Sports. The Lakers are finalizing details to acquire Hibbert, and there remains a possibility Los Angeles could send a player to the Pacers in the agreement, sources said. The Lakers and Pacers had agreed on a future second-round pick as compensation for Hibbert and his $15.5 million 2015-16 salary getting absorbed into Los Angeles’ salary-cap space. The Lakers are exploring trades for Young, Ryan Kelly and Robert Sacre. Sacre and/or Kelly are possibilities to go to Pacers, sources said. Young and Ryan Kelly and Sacre very much on block…Sacre and/or Kelly are possibilities to go to Pacers in the Hibbert deal."

For the sake of this article, I have omitted Sacre, Young and Kelly from consideration. This is because nothing is set in stone until July 8th. Also, they have also been linked to other rumors and trade talks and are not in a Pacers uniform… Yet.
