Per a report from Vigilant Sports, the Indiana Pacers brought in former VCU PG Briante Weber in for evaluation on Thursday.

Weber spent four seasons with the Rams before his career ended in January after an injury against Richmond, pictured below.

Weber is a “defensive specialist” with a knack for steals and when his career was ended by injury at the end of January, the Chesapeake native was just 12 steals shy of the all-time NCAA record. In four years with VCU, he averaged 6.8 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.9 steals per game, but most impressive were his numbers in his senior year – 8.1 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.9 steals per game.

In fact, Weber one-upped Pacers second round pick and former Oregon PG Joseph Young in this play earlier in the season.

Up until the Richmond game in January, Weber was playing very well. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn ACL/MCL/meniscus in that game and has been rehabbing since.

Though Weber is defensive-minded, he has shown his ability to distribute as well and is worth looking at for Indiana, who went big in the first round of the 2015 NBA Draft with Myles Turner but opted for Young.

Weber declared for the NBA Draft, but ultimately went undrafted.

Weber tweeted the photo above on Wednesday when en-route to Indianapolis, and per Agness’s report he was scheduled to meet with the team on Thursday. Agness suggests that it’s likely Weber would head to the NBA Development League before being given an opportunity to play with in the NBA, given he rehabs and passes his first tests.

Agness also suggests that it’s possible Weber gets a camp invite, which starts in a few weeks time.

In the mean time, Weber is on his way to Salt Lake City for “Pit Stop #2,” the Utah Jazz.
