Breaking: Pacers release G Toney Douglas, roster now set
The Indiana Pacers have today announced the release of guard Toney Douglas, bringing the roster down to the required number of 15 players in total.
It was always going to be either Toney Douglas or Shayne Whittington, and now it is confirmed by Yahoo! sources that the decision is made – and it will be the former.
Douglas was a small part of the Pacers rotation in the preseason and was a favorite for being the last guy to leave the team after the organization announced on Friday that Kadeem Jack and C.J. Fair were both waived.
It’s a tough situation for Douglas, who did indeed have a case to make the team especially with the way Indiana wants to play this season – small and fast. However, early signs from preseason have shown that the Pacers aren’t dead on the idea of playing that way and will make adjustments based on each opponent and the situation their roster is in.
So, what’s next for Toney Douglas? He’s now in the free agent pool after receiving the bad news from the Blue & Gold and is free to be picked up by any other team in the league. Though it is not certain how possible it is for him to be on a roster by the team the season begins tomorrow, he’s definitely someone who has shown he’s willing to fight for a place as he has done at multiple organizations in the past.
Best wishes to Toney Douglas, and congratulations to Shayne Whittington, who very well could have lost his job had things panned out in a different direction.
The Pacers will open the season on Wednesday in Toronto against the Raptors before returning home the next night to face the Memphis Grizzlies in the home opener. Tipoff for the game against Toronto is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
