The Indianapolis Colts need to add a young outside linebacker to their aging position group. If they do find young prospect, Robert Mathis would love to stick around and tutor him.

The Colts’ longtime pass rusher took to Twitter Monday after reading an article about his team. He posted an excerpt of the article, which pointed that he, Trent Cole and Erik Walden are all in their 30s and in the final years of their contracts.

There was nothing for Mathis to comment on in the small excerpt. However, Mathis used it as a way to let people know what his intentions were following the 2016 season.

There are two things to take from this simple tweet: 1) Mathis is willing to pass down his knowledge to younger players and 2) he does not want to retire after the 2016 season.

The first point might be the most important because the Colts do not have a young outside linebacker waiting to replace Mathis, Cole or Walden after 2016. If Mathis is willing to “tutor any young thundercat” while he is still a Colt, the team needs to bring someone in as soon as possible.

Robert Mathis has a lot of knowledge to pass down to a young prospect. He did not earn 118 sacks in his 13-year career without knowing a thing or two about pass rushing. Mathis’ experience would be wasted if he leaves the Colts without passing down some knowledge to his eventual replacement.

Mathis will turn 36 years old in the February following the 2016 season. At that age, retiring from football becomes or should become a legitimate decision. However, with this recent tweet, it sounds like Mathis wants to stick around for the 2017 season and hopefully stay with the Colts in the process.

It is nice to hear that Robert Mathis is interested in staying with the Colts. Unfortunately, it is too early to debate whether or not the Colts should give him a one-year extension. This decision will most likely be determined by how well he plays in 2016.

Robert Mathis’ tweet points out that outside linebacker was a huge concern for the Colts this offseason. Unfortunately, the Colts have been unable to make any significant acquisition to address the position because of their lack of cap space. Hopefully, the Colts will use the draft to find their future pass rusher. If they do, Mathis is will to teach the young prospect “the art of pass rushing”, which will benefit the Colts in the future.
