Arthur Jones, Defensive Tackle

The Indianapolis Colts have 33 million reasons to be disappointed with the veteran. First of all, that is value of the contract he signed with the Colts in 2014. They are wondering if this is the year they will finally get a solid return on their investment.

After signing his five-year, $33-million deal in 2014, Jones has only appeared in nine games for the Colts. His tenure with the team has been marred by injuries. He missed seven games because of a pesky high-ankle sprain in 2014 and missed the entire 2015 season after tearing ligaments in his left ankle in preseason.

In the nine games, he played for the Colts, he only recorded 34 combined tackles and 1.5 sacks. He did play with an ankle injury, but still, the Colts expected a lot more production from him.

Jones will enter training camp on thin ice with the team. Early this offseason, the Colts and Jones agreed to lower Jones’ 2016 salary from $4.5 million down to $2.5 million, which makes him easier to cut if the Colts have to. Jones can make that money back through incentives.

Meanwhile, the Colts are also loaded with talent along their defensive line. Kendall Langford emerged as a strong veteran presence for the Colts, while Henry Anderson and David Parry had excellent rookie seasons in 2015. Even though Anderson is still recovering from an ACL tear, all three are projected to be the Colts’ eventual starting front line.

After those three linemen, the Colts have good depth. They have T.Y. McGill and Zach Kerr, who both played a lot of snaps for the Colts in 2015, and also drafted Hassan Ridgeway, who can be an immediate rotation player for them.

Once he completely recovers from his ankle injury, Jones will have to battle his way back into the defensive line rotation. However, Jones’ first concerns should be trying to stay healthy.

Let’s hope of his sake, the ankle problems are a thing of the past because the Colts cannot endure another injury-riddled season from him.
