Inside Linebacker Nate Irving

Nate Irving is in the middle of a position battle for a starting inside linebacker spot. The Indianapolis Colts already have D’Qwell Jackson occupying one of their two starting inside linebacker spots. Irving is battling with Sio Moore for the other spot.

Irving is the player to focus on in this position battle because Irving received most of the starting reps during OTAs and minicamp. He is also coming off a relatively disappointing 2015 season. As a result, people what to see if he has improved.

Irving spent his entire 2015 offseason recovering from a 2014 ACL tear. His recovery leaked into the regular season, and he was not able to be a huge contributor for the Colts in 2015.

Now, Irving is nearly two years removed from the injury. With that in mind, the Colts are expecting him to claim ownership of the vacant starting inside linebacker spot.

Irving usually shines in run stopping situation. He main issue will be in pass coverage. He will not be asked to play in man-on-man coverage often. However, he needs to prove he is agile enough to cover a running back out of the backfield if he wants to be a clear-cut starter.

The Indianapolis Colts seem like they want Irving to claim the starting role and will give him a good amount of opportunities to win the good. A lot of eyes will be on Irving during training camp to see if he can develop into a reliable starter.
