Indianapolis Colts cornerback Vontae Davis is expected to miss the first month of the regular season due to an ankle injury. The injury appears to be more serious than originally thought, when Davis was listed as week-to-week.

An already-shortened Indianapolis Colts defense just became even weaker, as starting cornerback Vontae Davis is expected to miss at least a month of action due to an ankle injury.

With Arthur Jones and Kendall Langford out for some time as well, this is a low-blow to a Colts defense that ranked 26th in the NFL last year, allowing roughly 370 yards per-game.

To help put a bandaid over the wound, the Colts signed veteran Antonio Cromartie to a one-year deal on Monday.

Davis was diagnosed with a ‘medial sprain.’ ESPN injury expert Stephania Bell differentiated between a regular ankle sprain and a medial sprain, per Mike Wells of ESPN.com.

"“This is not your typical ankle sprain. Medial sprains are less common, for sure,” Bell said. “If you’re standing and you rolled your ankle so that the inside of the sole of your foot is pointing out and the inside of your ankle is rolling like it is going to go in and touch the ground, that’s how you stretch the medial side of the ankle. It’s an injury to the ligaments on the inner side of that ankle. I can’t put a definite timetable on it because I don’t how much damage was done.”“Sometimes guys will get a cast to immobilize the ankle,” Bell said. “They want to keep it from moving. They put it there because they just want to get whatever is injured to scar down and they want to minimize the chance they’re going to move it so that you don’t aggravate any damage you have.”"

The Colts play the Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos, the San Diego Chargers and the Jacksonville Jaguars through the first month of the season that he could possibly miss.

Next: Indianapolis Colts Sign Veteran Cornerback Antonio Cromartie

With five cornerbacks on the current roster injured, the Colts can only hope that Cromartie fills Davis’s void on the team, as well as Davis returning sooner instead of later into the season.

The Indianapolis Colts take on the Philadelphia Eagles Saturday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. ET.
