Indianapolis Colts Prove They Still Belong in Division Race
By Luke Allen
The Indianapolis Colts defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 29-26 on Sunday afternoon, improving to 4-5 on the season.
The Indianapolis Colts survived a late push by the Jaguars, ultimately winning an important divisional game.
The Colts led 29-26 when the Jaguars were driving in hopes of tying or winning the game with less than a minute to go when the Colts defense came up with another huge turnover. Cornerback Kenny Moore II forced the ball out of Jags receiver Rashad Greene Sr.’s grasp and safety Malik Hooker recovered, securing the win for Indianapolis.
The Colts led 29-16 at the half and appeared to be on their way to a dominant win. The Colts, in theory, should have won this game in a blowout. They should have scored 50.
The first half showed a dominant offensive performance. Andrew Luck came out of the gates throwing heat – completing 16/20 passes for 217 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first half. All three of his touchdown tosses went to tight end Eric Ebron, who had a monstrous first half. The Colts looked like they were ready to embarrass the Jaguars’ vaunted defense:
In the second half, it was a bit of a different story. I believe Frank Reich took his foot off the pedal a bit, and it almost cost them.
The Jaguars scored 10 straight points to pull within 3, and it looked like the Colts could be ready to give up another lead in another game. That has been the narrative all year; if the Colts could hang on to fourth quarter leads, this team would be 7-3 or better.
Although the defense had allowed 10 straight points, and the offense was sputtering in conservative mode, the defense was not about to surrender another fourth quarter letdown. The Colts came up with a turnover when they needed it the most and proved that they could win the close ones.
Indianapolis has won three straight games, largely in part to the fact they are at full strength. We are witnessing how good this team can truly be once they are healthy. This team looks great. They can contend with anyone. Although the Houston Texans seem to be running away with the division (two games ahead, 6-3), the Colts should certainly not be counted out just yet.
