Caitlin Clark is currently out with a quad injury and had to watch her team battle the Washington Mystics from the sidelines. The Indiana Fever finally got a win without their star guard, led by Kelsey Mitchell‘s 24 points.

With improved play from her teammates, Clark had a much better time on the bench than in the Fever‘s last two games. Clark (and Aliyah Boston) even provided some meme-worthy footage in a surprising situation.

Seeing Clark celebrating and being a presence on the bench was not a surprise. The surprising part was that one of her best meme moments yet was caused by a player the Fever had just signed on June 3. Aari McDonald had just joined the Fever but immediately had an impact far beyond the charge she took from Brittney Sykes to impress Clark.

That was the second charge McDonald drew in the game. She also got another one against Aaliyah Edwards in transition.

Aari McDonald played well in her first game with the Fever

Aari McDonald spent last least with the Los Angeles Sparks but was waived before the season in a difficult roster move. The Fever gave her another shot at WNBA minutes, signing McDonald to a hardship contract after the injuries to Clark and Sophie Cunningham decimated the Fever’s depth, and the guard delivered.

McDonald finished her first game with the Fever with seven points, a team-high five assists, and three steals. She played 27 big minutes and provided a massive spark off the bench. McDonald handled the ball, created opportunities for her teammates, and guarded Brittney Sykes, the Mystics leading scorer, for much of the game.

McDonald provided the right kind of energy for a Fever team in desperate need of a win without its star player. Without McDonald, the Fever may not have gotten this win and fans wouldn’t have been treated to the video of Clark’s perfect reaction to McDonald’s drawn charge.

McDonald made her case for a significant role in the WNBA in just one game—whether that will be with the Fever or another team in need of a backup point guard.

McDonald can help the Fever extend their win streak

McDonald’s hardship contract with the Fever lasts seven days, meaning she will also be available for Indiana’s game against the Chicago Sky. That is another game the Fever need to win, even without Clark and Cunningham. It is also another opportunity for McDonald to make a play for a longer contract.

After that game, Clark may be ready to return to the court for the Fever’s third matchup against the Atlanta Dream.
