Fan petition to oust Sophie Cunningham from WNBA is as embarrassing as it sounds

You think it will work?

Sophie Cunningham decided to take matters into her own hands with under a minute left to play in the Indiana Fever's win over the Sun on Tuesday. Doing so resulted in X (Twitter) user @thecrownliberty creating a petition on change.org to "remove" Cunningham from the WNBA for "misconduct."

The petition has 117 verified signatures thus far. A few people who signed it left comments, with one reading, "Ruining the game with her nasty antics!" The Crown wrote five paragraphs about why Cunningham should be removed from the league, saying that her departure will "help maintain the WNBA as a shining example of professionalism and respect in sports."

The creator of the petition runs a troll account on X, so perhaps this is their way of being funny. One thing is for sure -- it won't result in the WNBA banishing Cunningham. There needs to be a petition about better officiating in the W, which, as Stephanie White said after the Fever's win on Tuesday, isn't an issue exclusive to her team.

Petition to remove Sophie Cunningham from the WNBA is hilarious

Sun guard Jacy Sheldon got a steal with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter and raced down the court for a fast-break layup. Cunningham kept pace with Sheldon and pulled her down before she could go up for the layup. Sheldon's teammate, Lindsay Allen, immediately went up to Cunningham, as did Sheldon after she popped up off the floor.

The officials gave Cunningham a flagrant foul penalty 2. Sheldon and Allen received technical fouls. All three were ejected.

The scuffle occurred after Sheldon hit Caitlin Clark in the face while guarding her in the third quarter. Clark grabbed her eye and pushed Sheldon, which led to Marina Mabrey going up to Clark and knocking her to the ground. Sheldon received a flagrant foul penalty, while Clark and Mabrey received technical fouls. Mabrey wasn't ejected, for whatever reason.

Cunningham was sick of watching Clark get hounded, so she went after Sheldon. Was it a good idea? No. However, it happened in the heat of the moment after the officiating let things get to that point. The Fever have an enforcer in Cunningham, who has a fiery attitude. She doesn't let things slide when it comes to her teammates.

Fever fans love Cunningham, who landed in Indiana as part of an offseason trade. Her popularity in Indianapolis is skyrocketing after Tuesday's win. So much for that petition!
