Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has seen her popularity increase a significant level in 2025 with her new team. Cunningham, who was acquired during the offseason, has also not been shy about calling out WNBA referees. The Fever player previously shared a TikTok that was clearly intended to criticize "some refs". On Wednesday, Cunningham revealed that she was fined $500 for the video.
"I got fined $500 for this TikTok," Cunningham wrote, adding two laughing emojis as well. "idk why this is funny to me… like ok you got it bud! Cause there’s not more important things to be worried about with our league right now."
The players are calling for the league to increase their salaries. They want a larger portion of the revenue share. That is likely what Cunningham is referring to with her "more important things" to be concerned with remarks.
The 28-year-old is averaging 7.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per outing across 19 games played so far in 2025. Cunningham is also shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 40 percent on her three-point attempts. She had spent her entire career with the Phoenix Mercury before landing with the Fever this past offseason, playing in Phoenix from 2019-2024.
Cunningham plays the game hard. She is no stranger to talking trash and getting into altercations. The guard has earned the respect of Fever fans with her aggressive style of play, even becoming known as an "enforcer" for star Caitlin Clark.
Cunningham clearly is not backing down in terms of speaking her mind. She is willing to accept the fines, but it won't stop her from calling things out that she does not agree with. While some fans may not support Cunningham, there is no question that she is passionate about her team and the sport of basketball.
As for the Fever, Indiana currently holds a 12-12 record. The Fever are five games back of the New York Liberty for first place in the Eastern Conference standings. New York defeated Indiana 98-84 on Tuesday night, a contest that represented both teams' first game following the WNBA All-Star break.
Sophie Cunningham will look to continue making a big impact with the Fever. Her tenacity and efficient shooting on the floor have been significant for Indiana. The Fever have endured an up and down season overall, but Cunningham has been a positive acquisition for the most part.
