The Indiana Fever entered the 2025 season with the goal to compete for a championship. Indiana got off to a rocky start, suffering some bad losses and losing Caitlin Clark to a quad injury. After a massive statement win over the New York Liberty, the Fever are finally on the right track.

As of now, the playoffs are still far away, but another big competition is waiting: the Commissioner’s Cup championship game. In June, all teams in the WNBA compete for a chance to win their conference and play for a big prize pool in the Commissioner’s Cup final. After a tough loss to Atlanta, it seemed that winning the Eastern Conference was already out of reach for the Fever. The win over New York changed that.

The Fever now sit in first place in the Eastern Conference and will likely head to the final to face the Minnesota Lynx. That is not only a chance to win extra money but also offers a glimpse of what the future might hold. In the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the teams that made it to the Commissioner’s Cup title game also went on to meet in the WNBA Finals.

The Fever will likely win the Eastern Conference

When the Fever beat the short-handed New York Liberty—they played without starters Jonquel Jones and Leonie Fiebich—it marked the first time this season that the Fever beat one of the top teams in the league. Big performances from Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, Lexie Hull, Aliyah Boston, and Sydney Colson propelled the Fever to a win and the top of the Commissioner’s Cup standings.

The Fever still have one game left to play for the Commissioner’s Cup. They will face the Connecticut Sun. Connecticut has only won two games all season long, and, while one of those wins came against the Fever, Indiana looks much better now and should be able to take care of business against the Sun. If they can do that and the Dream lose to the Liberty, a trip to the Commissioner’s Cup title game is guaranteed since the Fever hold the tiebreaker over the Liberty.

If history repeats itself, the Fever will have a good chance to accomplish their ultimate goal as well.

The Fever have one major goal this season

For a team that has struggled as much as the Fever have in recent years, just winning a playoff series would be a major win. Caitlin Clark, however, has made it clear in the past that she views a championship as the only truly successful outcome of the season.

While the Fever’s overall record doesn’t represent the team’s talent and potential, a deep playoff run is well within reach. With a massive win over the defending champions and a trip to the Commissioner’s Cup title game right at their fingertips, the Fever are one step closer to actually winning a title.
