Sydney Colson just proved Fever are more than the Caitlin Clark show
By Elaine Blum

Caitlin Clark’s return to the court lived up to the hype. Despite missing several games with a quad injury, Clark needed no time to ease herself back into the game. She immediately led the Indiana Fever to a massive win over the New York Liberty.
Clark was unquestionably the star of the show, scoring 32 points and knocking down seven threes to hype up the crowd in Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull were also big, pitching in 22 and 14 points, respectively.
Clark’s energetic return from injury overshadowed another, rather unexpected, great performance. Sydney Colson played her best game of the season, putting points on the board, making plays for her teammates, and defending well.
Sydney Colson reminded everyone why the Fever signed her
Colson didn’t get off to the greatest start, producing little offensively. While Aari McDonald was with the Fever on a hardship contract, it even seemed that she was making a case for getting minutes over Colson. Against the Liberty, Colson reminded everyone what she could do as a backup point guard.
Colson played 20 minutes and finished the game with 10 points, on very efficient shooting, one rebound, six big assists, and one steal. She was the Fever’s leading scorer off the bench, hit a couple of big threes, and allowed Clark to rest whenever she needed to. While Clark played 31 minutes, it was obvious that she wasn’t in perfect shape yet and needed more regular breaks. Colson held down the fort, running the show for the Fever well and setting up her teammates.
That is exactly what the Fever signed Colson for—to have a veteran backup point guard who can defend well and keep the offense alive while Clark is out. Clark may be the face of the Indiana Fever and one of the brightest stars in the game, but she will not win a championship by herself.
The Fever’s supporting cast must continue to play well
Handing the New York Liberty their first loss of the season is a huge step in the right direction for the Fever. Nevertheless, they still have some ground to make up. Even after this win, the Lynx and Liberty are the undisputed top teams in the league, and the Fever haven’t separated themselves from the Dream, Mercury, Storm, and Aces yet.
The Fever need to string together a couple of wins to move up in the standings and realize this team’s full potential. Clark is the key to achieving that. She proved she could elevate her team and lead the Fever to wins over great teams. However, this win wouldn’t have been possible without Kelsey Mitchell stepping up as a scorer, Aliyah Boston recording a double-double, and Lexie Hull and Sydney Colson playing their roles to perfection.
