Frank Gore to the Colts?

With the Trent Richardson experiment coming to an end, the Indianapolis Colts could be turning their attention to another running back, Frank Gore of the San Francisco 49ers.

According to Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, the Colts could be the top landing spot for Frank Gore. Gore will be a free agent this offseason, and there’s uncertainty on whether he’ll be back with the 49ers.

The Colts are still in desperate need of a running attack. Richardson was a bust. Vick Ballard and Ahmad Bradshaw have been unable to stay healthy the last couple of years, and Dan Herron is still finding his way in the NFL.

Gore would come to Indianapolis with the opportunity to start, as well as plenty of Miami ties in Chuck Pagano (perhaps a returning Reggie Wayne), but he will mostly be linked to associate head coach Rob Chudzinski.

Chudzinski was at “The U” from 1994-2003, serving as offensive coordinator there from 2001-03. Gore was a freshman at Miami in 2001, rushing for 820 yards and 12 touchdowns … as a backup behind Clinton Portis.

Though the Colts could use a guy like Frank Gore in the backfield, he is a 31-year-old running back. That’s a lot of miles for that position. However, Gore has been pretty durable over his NFL career, while rushing for more than 1,000 yards eight times in 10 NFL seasons.

Signing Gore to a one- or two-year deal would be a good move for Indy. He wouldn’t be the long term answer at running back, but could be a solid starter for the next couple of seasons. Meanwhile, the Colts can address more prominent needs in the NFL Draft, and perhaps take a flyer on a rookie running back, allowing them to groom under Gore.

Without Gore, the Colts are left choosing between Ballard, Bradshaw, Herron and Zurlon Tipton. Though each back has played well in spurts, Indy could really use some stability at the position. Frank Gore brings that stability, and the Colts would be wise to bring him to Indy, if the feelings are indeed mutual.
