Colts GM Ryan Grigson has a penchant to sign former Eagles players, will he sign Evan Mathis?

It is no secret that the Indianapolis Colts’ general manager Ryan Grigson has a penchant for signing former Philadelphia Eagles players. Much of this is attributed to Grigson’s tenure as the Eagles director of player personnel.

For example, Trent Cole and Todd Herremans signed with the Colts this offseason as former Eagles free agents. With Herremans on-board, would it be a stretch to bring in Evan Mathis?

The 33-year old Mathis is still a highly sought after free agent. The only hesitation for him has been his asking price. On the plus side, Mathis is coming off back-to-back Pro Bowls and was selected by the Associated Press, Pro Football Writers and Pro Football Focus as a 1st team All-Pro in 2013.

Despite his age, Evan Mathis graded out as the #2 guard in 2014 according to Pro Football Focus and was the top-ranked guard in 2011-2013.

Adding Mathis would improve the left guard position vacated by Mewhort as he slides over to right tackle. Mathis is an upgrade over Lance Louis and Hugh Thornton who have both struggled to maintain consistency the past two seasons.

Additionally, Mathis would add to the overall continuity with his veteran leadership and has previous chemistry playing along-side Todd Herremans who is penciled in as the Colts right guard heading into training camp.
