Could Jake Long be added on a prove it deal as a backup?

Perhaps the Colts stick with their first team unit from the offseason. If so, added depth at tackle is needed to supplement the line in case of injuries. Continuity is key and the presence of veteran leadership to help develop the younger lineman is a must.  The Colts should consider taking a flyer on seven-year veteran Jake Long.

The Indianapolis Colts lack of continuity on the offensive line is due to multiple injured starters over the past two seasons.  Admittedly, the 30-year old Long has an injury history of his own, if he is medically cleared he could be signed under a one-year prove it deal. The Colts could be the best place for Long to resurrect his career and prove he is worth a big contract in 2016.

Jake Long is a four-time Pro Bowl player from 2008-2011 all four seasons of which were while he started at tackle for the Miami Dolphins. Long has started in all 96 games he has played in. 2014 was the first time in his career that he did not play in at least 12 games in a season.

Long’s career is similar to defensive lineman Kendall Langford who excelled in Miami and then struggled after signing with the St. Louis Rams. Perhaps Long can resurrect his career on a prove it deal. At the least he adds needed depth at tackle and it never hurts to have a former all-pro in the offensive line’s classrooms during camp.
