Colts Training Camp: Day 3 News and Notes
By Dave McKee
Chuck Pagano goes #BerryStrong during the Colts Training Camp on Tuesday. The running game was emphasized and Frank Gore impressed. Drew Rosenhaus was on-site for negotiations.
The shoulder pads were on and the physicality increased at the Colts training camp in Anderson, IN. Several veterans had a day off from practice. The most notable of the non-participants included Vontae Davis, Bjoern Werner and D’Qwell Jackson. Vick Ballard pulled up with a tight hamstring during practice and fans in attendance held their collective breaths. However, the injury was not serious and he was held out for the remainder of practice joining the rest on the sidelines.

Head coach Chuck Pagano drew headlines across the NFL nation with his display of support for Chiefs safety Eric Berry. “The Fifth Dimension” was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma and 8 months later he is cancer free. Pagano is well known for his cancer survival and the Chuckstrong movement that followed in the wake of his recovery has not stopped.
Following the diagnosis of Berry, Chiefs coach Andy Reid, contacted Pagano and asked him a favor. Pagano had coached Berry in the 2014 Pro Bowl immediately contacted Berry and began advising him on what to expect with treatment and the best practices to get through each day. Berry was cleared to practice at the end of July. During his return announcement, Berry credited Pagano for his help:
"“It was crazy, even to the point where, coach Pagano, he would text me and tell me, ‘Look, they’re going to do a bone marrow biopsy, this is what you need to be prepared for; this, this, this and this.’ And he had me prepared for a lot of the things that I wasn’t aware of, so I think I was just very blessed to have people to reach out and help me along this whole situation.”"
Frank Gore is good impressive Extraordinary
Frank Gore is 32, but looking at him run behind his pads, through holes and making cutbacks its easy to think he is just entering his prime. Teammate Greg Toler told reporters that Gore is “running the ball like he’s 22.”
The Blue Mare, Heather Loyd of Colts.com provided a great perspective on the offseason addition of Gore. A man of few words, Gore puts it simply “I’m here. I’m a Colt.”
Evan Reller, of Fansided’s Horseshoe Heroes, was on site and offered us his take on Gore:
"“There is a big gap between him and the other backs. The difference isn’t just speed, but his consistency on plays. Gore had one bad play where he would have been tackled for a loss by Jerrell Freeman on a delayed handoff.”"
Negotiations are ongoing
This is the running story line of training camp so far. The Colts, T.Y. Hilton and Anthony Castonzo are looking to get contract extensions and negotiations completed by Labor Day. And it looks like business is picking up. Superstar agent Drew Rosenhaus was in Anderson meeting with the Colts GM Ryan Grigson.
Wednesday Night: Full Pads and Full Contact:
The Lights go on in Anderson on Wednesday Night this will be the first real test of the offense and defense. Full pads and full contact the aggressiveness will pick up and the contact will be harder. It is the first true test of the team’s toughness. Under the lights, this night practice is important for those trying to make the 53-man roster. Every player will do what they can to standout. Come out and support the Colts. Practice begins at 6:25 and is scheduled to end at 9:10 pm.
