Colts Camp Review: An Ink on Indy Roundtable
By Dave McKee
Colts Camp officially came to a close on August 14th after spending two weeks in Anderson, Indiana. The Colts lived up to the fan expectations with impressive performances in their workouts.
No one can argue that the Colts Camp was a wide-ranging success, even if we were to forego the usual fan bias. Overall fan attendance was well above expectations. According to Colts.com, The total attendance for the two weeks was 38,148 an average of over 3,000 per practice session. Little negative could be of said of how the Colts looked but their was a great deal to be excited about.
First off, the weather was magnificent throughout Colts Camp which helped the attendance numbers. Not a single practice had to be closed or rescheduled due to inclement weather. As far as positives go, there were several highlight moments daily in the 1-on-1, 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

Two major storylines during Colts Camp were the contract negotiations of wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and Andrew Luck‘s blindside protector, Anthony Castonzo. The ink is still drying on Hilton’s 5-year $65 million extension. Expectations are that Castonzo’s deal – which is being negotiated – is on track to be completed by Labor Day as Colts owner Jim Irsay envisioned.
Amazingly, only one severe injury was reported throughout the entirety of Colts Camp. Guard Ben Heenan suffered a torn meniscus on August 7th and will likely be out another four to six weeks following surgery. He was waived/injured by the Colts shortly afterward and it is expected that the team will consider bringing him back once he recovers.

Indianapolis signed local product, Kitt O’Brien, who played collegiately at Ball State University to replace Heenan at guard. Heenan’s injury was literally the only negative that could be spoken of regarding Colts Camp. Others had tight hamstrings or strained groins but nothing major to report. Anyone missing time during the preseason will likely be doing so as a precaution instead of necessity.
Some questions still remain while others originated from the two weeks spent in Anderson. Was the 3rd wide receiver position battle really the most exciting as we previously predicted? Following Colts Camp, who is the player to watch in preseason? Who made the biggest splash in Colts Camp? Finally, a three-part question on the greatest concern to Colts fans heading into preseason. Who is on the bubble to make the roster? Who makes the cut? Who doesn’t?
The Ink on Indy staff weighed these questions in review of all that we witnessed during Colts Camp. So, without further ado, let’s begin the Colts Camp review.
