Notre Dame opened their basketball season against St. Francis (PA) on Friday Night. The Fighting Irish quickly outpaced the Red Flash and never looked back winning by 31, 87-56.

Notre Dame unveiled their ACC Championship banner and an offensive attack that a featured career-high 27 points for Demetrius Jackson and a double-double – 15 points and 14 rebounds (a career high) – by Zach AugusteSteve Vasturia also stepped up with 10 points and four rebounds in the win.

Notre Dame went up early and never looked back as they executed their game plan to perfection.

Things were going so well for the Irish that even Jackson, a 6-foot-1 point guard was showing off his hops in the paint. As seen here:

The efforts of Jackson and Auguste were not the only highlights of the night. The Irish’s team effort was no full display. They executed on both ends of the court to near perfection with great ball movement and excellent defense. There were very few negatives to take away from the night.

The team effort on the glass and on defense set the tone for the Irish.  Notre Dame had more defensive rebounds (32) than their opponent could total (31). The Irish hit the boards with reckless abandon and out-rebounded the Red Flash 53-31.

Head Coach Mike Brey was proud of how his team answered his challenge and handled business on opening night. Before the game, Brey harkened back to the Golden State Warriors’ first game of the NBA season when they unveiled their NBA Championship Banner.

"“I told our guys before the game, you know the Golden State Warriors dropped a banner and then just played their backsides off to start the next season. Can we be men enough and focused enough to be a little bit like them. And I thought we were. When Demetrius Jackson and Zach Auguste, your two best players, get started like that, it’s a good start for us.”"

If you missed the game there is an excellent highlight reel on Friday Night’s action posted by @NDmbb:

The game also drew in some celebrity notoriety including the WWE’s Sheamus, who met with the players on Friday night. Sheamus was also seen on the Irish sideline for Saturday’s Notre Dame v. Wake Forest football game.

Notre Dame tips off their second game of the season at home on Tuesday night, November 17th against UW-Milwaukee. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm EST.
