The Indianapolis Colts fell 30-14 to the Kansas City Chiefs in Lucas Oil Stadium Sunday. In the loss, they continued to commit the same errors and display the same lack of discipline that has haunted them throughout this season.

The Chiefs came into this contest as only three-point favorites. Clearly, oddsmakers gave the Colts way too much credit because they did not put up much of a fight against the Chiefs in the 30-14 blowout loss.

The usual weaknesses for the Colts are poor pass defense,  untimely penalties and horrific pass protection. All of these issues reared their ugly heads Sunday afternoon.

More from Indianapolis Colts

The Colts’ defense could not stop Chiefs’ starting quarterback Alex Smith and his backup Nick Foles. Smith threw for 127 passing yards and a touchdown before suffering a concussion. In relief of Smith, Foles threw for 223 passing yards and two touchdowns.

As for penalties, the Colts only committed five of them officially. However, most were very costly. Two penalties gave the Chiefs automatic first downs.

Meanwhile, an offensive penalty nullified a 45-yard touchdown catch by Donte Moncrief and another one cancelled a 40-yard reception by T.Y. Hilton. Also, the Colts had plenty more penalties that were not accepted by the Chiefs.

Lastly, the pass protection was once again an issue. Andrew Luck entered the game tied with Andy Dalton as the most sacked quarterback (25 times). The Chiefs added six more sacks to Luck’s total Sunday thanks to the relentless pressure from their front seven.

The lone bright spot for the Colts was Luck, who honestly had a sub-par game at best. He threw completed only 19 of his 35 passes for 210 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also added 60 yards on the ground because he was forced to scramble often.

Injury-wise, the Colts got Donte Moncrief back from a shoulder injury, but it appears T.Y. Hilton tweaked his nagging hamstring injury in the loss. Moving forward, Hilton’s injury could have dramatic implications on their offense, which is already low on playmakers.

The Colts are halfway through their season, and they have failed to solve their numerous issues. At this point, it may be pointless to expect them to make dramatic improvements. If they have not fixed the issues by now, they probably never will.

Their supporters may have to face reality:  the Colts are an inconsistent, injury-riddled team that lacks enough discipline to be considered a playoff team.
