It's looking like a "grand opening, grand closing" scenario for DeWanna Bonner. Annie Costabile reports that the seasoned veteran is looking for greener pastures less than two months into her tenure as a member of the Indiana Fever.

Bonner has been out of the lineup since June 12 for "personal reasons." Fans have been speculating what the issue could be, and this report, while it shines a light on the "what happens next," it doesn't tell us why it's happening. Still, the Fever have been without the six-time All-Star's services for four games. They're 2-2 in over that stretch, and what comes next is anyone's guess for a team with high aspirations.

Indiana will need a path forward without DeWanna Bonner

The former Mercury forward was only averaging seven points this season—the lowest of her career. Could that be the reason for her departure? Indiana's offense is very Caitlin Clark-centric with a heavy focus on getting Kelsey Mitchell going and working the 2-man game with Aliyah Boston. Everyone else has to get theirs in the flow of the offense or off of hustle plays.

However, her defense and basketball IQ will be missed. There's no way that this gets resolved in any way other than trading Bonner, so they'll need to either replace those traits with the right trade or someone is going to need to step up. There were high hopes for this season. A title may not have been on the table, but the fans want to see a competitive playoff team.

Trading the disgruntled vet to her preferred destination may not be the best way to ensure that goal is reached. If there is a beneficial deal that works for both sides, that's fine. Bonner is a pro's pro, and you don't want to do wrong by her. But the franchise's goals must be taken into account.

Recently, social media watchers realized the 16-year veteran removed anything Fever-related from her bio on Instagram. The writing was on the wall from that point. Before then, fans held out hope that Bonner would return to her post. She started for this team before being asked to move to the bench. It's unfortunate to hear that her rejoining the team won't happen.

Playing for the Fever is probably exhausting mentally. I wouldn't rule out the possibility that a combination of the constant microscope placed on the players and the blame they receive when the team isn't doing well, mixed with an unfavorable offense, led to this alleged outcome. We may never know, but it looks like the DeWanna Bonner experience in Indy is over.
