Fever's best veteran acquisition must step up after injury bug bites team

The Indiana Fever suffered two additional injuries to their guard room in their loss to the Connecticut Sun, losing both Sydney Colson and Sophie Cunningham throughout the contest with neither returning.

The Fever are, of course, already without Caitlin Clark for the next week or so as she continues to recover from her quad injury. So, the team is down to just two starters at guard and essentially no one on the bench left to run point for the team. Even if Cunningham was healthy, she's the teams' sharp shooter off the bench - not a floor general.

This leaves the Fever with an awkward situation if Colson and Cunningham are unable to get back on the floor soon. With no one to run point, Indiana is stuck with a ton of talented shooters, an elite forward in Aliyah Boston, and no way to connect A to B smoothly. Despite her best efforts, Boston cannot be the only ball handler and scorer for the starting lineup.

Enter: DeWanna Bonner.

Bonner must step up after Fever lose major guard depth to injury

The veteran forward can spark an offense at the drop of a hat. If you just watch the 4th quarter of the Sun game back, she single handedly put the team on her back with multiple three pointers that looked far too easy considering how contested they were. She's a true leader, as well, having championship experience and the exact amount of league mileage to be a mentor but still contribute.

Bonner isn't a passer, per se, so she doesn't solve that issue for the Fever. But, if she's inserted into more rotations with guards like Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull, and alongside a big willing to pass like Boston, she can help Indiana get their offense going.

Bonner has had a slow start to the season so far, but her game against Connecticut should inspire confidence in head coach Stephanie White to play her more often moving forward. She'll have to play her more if Cunningham and Colson are out for the teams' next few games, as they'll have to sacrifice some of their defense for more scoring in the form of Bonner.
