2015 sixth-round pick Josh Robinson has great potential but needs to shine in a deep backfield competition. Against collegiate competition he was a buzzsaw to opposing defenses. Can he perform like that at the next level?
Heading into training camp, Josh Robinson looked like a threat to compete along with Dan Herron for the backup running back spot behind Frank Gore.

In fact, I had him picked as a player to make the
in training camp. Surprisingly, he has not received as much praise as expected. This is not a knock on his progress or productivity. Instead, it highlights the actual depth and talent level currently on the roster at the running back position.
Recently the Indianapolis Colts unofficial depth chart was released during training camp.
Robinson is currently listed 5th behind Gore, Herron, Zurlon Tipton and Vick Ballard respectively. Robinson is an elusive running back who is hard to bring down. Hence the nickname “The Human Bowling Ball.” He has the potential to become a game wrecker in the NFL and as I have previously stated, he runs like a young Frank Gore.
Robinson needs to make the most of his opportunities to climb a few rungs up the depth chart. Most importantly he needs to make an impact in preseason and gain some momentum in the live action audition.
The first preseason game against Philadelphia is exactly this kind of opportunity Robinson needs. Look for him to get his share of carries late in the first or second half against the Eagles. As inspiring as his journey to the NFL is, it would be even better tale if he makes the 53-man roster.
